South Africa
All guns were out on Saturday during South Africa’s main opposition party the Democratic Alliance’s final Municipal election campaign rally in Soweto, South of Johannesburg.
As is the norm, party leader Mmusi Maimani juxtaposed his party to that of the ruling party the African National Congress and punted on its failures to deliver on its promises since coming into power.
“The people of this country have been betrayed by this government. They voted for jobs and services, but instead they get more unemployment and corruption. It is time that we do to the ANC what we did to the apartheid government (Zulu words). It is time to rise up against the injustices that is perpetrated daily against the people of this country,” he said.
Maimane called on voters to “punish” the ANC, which has been in power since the democratic dispensation in 1994, to which the party’s supporters agreed .
“The ANC has had his chance, they had 20 years. People still have no jobs, infrastructure is still not in place, this is the opportunity for change,” said one supporter.
Maimane recently received a heavy lashing for claiming that his party is the only party that champions former President Nelson Mandela’s legacy. This is after his unveiling of the party’s latest poster – which reads “honour Madiba’s dream by voting DA”.
President Jacob Zuma weighed in on the matter saying Madiba saw the DA as a party that only sees black people as voting fodder.
Elections are scheduled for the 3rd of July.
